Training quality

Mustangs Driving School teaches in LV, RU. Presto Driving School – LV, RU, EN.

Mustangs teaches only 4 categories – A, A2, B and BE, while Presto Driving School teaches all categories, including training professional drivers. Although Mustangs Driving School has been operating for a long time, it can be described as a narrowly specialized, “small” driving school.

Mustangs offers distance learning only for category B, while Presto Driving School offers the largest selection of distance learning products in Latvia (AM, A, A1, A2, B (LV, RU, EN), BE, C, CE, Code 95, C95, D95).

Out of 200 Latvian driving schools, Mustangs and Presto Driving School are 2 of the 5 that have their own category B distance learning products, receiving CSDD registration as 2nd and 4th respectively. Mustangs offers its distance learning product to other driving schools (autoskolaonline.lv), while Presto Driving School does not.

Mustangs Driving School operates only in Riga and Jelgava. Presto Driving School teaches in almost all of Latvia.

Mustangs Driving School appears in driving school statistics under SIA AG-ARMA.

Theory

Combined in-person and distance learning data show that the theory exam result of Mustangs Driving School is 68,64%. The result of Presto Driving School is 76,49%. The industry average indicator is 67,89%. Thus, one of the leaders in free theory courses, Mustangs, shows theory exam results that are well below acceptable standards.

Evaluating distance learning results separately, the Presto digital environment has the best CSDD exam results among all 5 platforms.

Driving

At Presto Driving School 29,85% of students pass the national category B driving exam on the first attempt. Mustangs Driving School shows a slightly better result in this category – 35,97%.

In AM, A1, A2 and AM categories the performance of Presto Driving School is 29,63%, which exceeds the Mustangs result – 0.00%. Mustangs is not popular in motorcycle training.

Regarding the BE category, the result of Presto Driving School students is 66,67%, while Mustangs – 0.00%. Mustangs Driving School is also not popular in this category.

Comparing the performance of Presto Driving School and Mustangs Driving School, it can be concluded that Presto stands out with better theory exam results in all categories, while Mustangs Driving School currently performs slightly better in category B driving exams. For motorcycle training and BE category, Presto Driving School will be a much safer choice.

Promotions

Mustangs Driving School runs promotions every day (24/7/365), offering theory courses free of charge or for 1 euro and sometimes cheap driving lessons, making it appear more accessible. No, you were not lucky to find this “good deal” – this is simply the price at which Mustangs Driving School values its product on a daily basis.

If we analyze the dumping of driving lesson prices in which Mustangs, Gross, and BAVA participate, in the case of Mustangs driving training is advertised from EUR 13. However, when examining instructor prices it becomes clear that the full price of a driving lesson (2 academic hours) is intentionally not shown – only half of it is displayed in order to confuse consumers.

Additionally, 95% of applicants will be disappointed because there are only 2 instructors offering such low prices, and the chances of getting one of them are minimal. It is clear that such instructors are temporarily subsidized for advertising purposes, since the market price (EUR 40) significantly exceeds the advertised price (EUR 26).

Overall, the pricing policy of Mustangs attempts to present the driving school as the cheapest and most accessible by dumping every price component. However, its main trick lies in the very short contract term (see the Contract analysis section below). Without this, such dumping would not be possible – the business would simply be unprofitable. In addition, a low service price rarely means low total costs (see the Costs section below).

Presto Driving School stands out with a socially responsible approach, supporting large families in Latvia and educational institutions by offering its distance learning product free of charge. It does not organize promotions that could negatively affect students’ total costs or safety. Instead, Presto offers students stable value – high-quality learning content and an effective system for mastering it.

Service

Let us evaluate the level of service included in the prices offered by the driving schools. Considering that Mustangs has the lowest client registration and service fee on the market – EUR 10 – you can expect service corresponding to that price.

Although both driving schools offer digital organization of the training process, after reviewing the Mustangs client profile and contract we did not find any advanced digital features. This means intensive communication with administration and significantly higher time consumption (for example, absence management).

Presto Driving School provides a fully digitalized training system that allows students to manage contracts, payments and learning progress remotely.

Both driving schools have digital driving lesson organization systems, which means instructors can be changed if necessary.

Presto Driving School also exclusively offers its clients the largest collection of thematic tasks in Latvia, which helps evaluate understanding of traffic rules and prepares students well for both the driving school and CSDD theory exams. Better learning products and knowledge control result in better exam results.

You may also like the Presto referral program – you can receive EUR 20 for each recommendation. Any energetic and sociable person can fully cover the cost of their driving lessons through referrals alone.

Contract analysis

Presto Driving School allows you to review contracts for all categories before signing them. Mustangs does not provide this option. The category B contract of Presto Driving School can be reviewed here, while the Mustangs contract can only be obtained upon request (if you are lucky).

Introduction

A contract clearly shows the maturity of a driving school. It reflects the training process, the organization of work, and the balance of responsibilities between the parties. It also contains rules that may later turn into unpleasant surprises. As we have mentioned many times before, the choice of a driving school would be completely different if consumers actually reviewed the contract before making a decision.

Mustangs has described its processes in less than 1.5 pages, while the contract of Presto Driving School is considerably longer. We have analyzed the Mustangs contract and outline the main differences compared to Presto at the end.

Higher driving deposit.

Clause 3.8.2 of the Mustangs contract states that a driving deposit of EUR 300 must be paid within 5 weeks from the start of training. If the deadline is missed, it will cost EUR 100 – equivalent to the loss of an 80% discount on theory training. Such an investment effectively forces students to begin driving lessons during theory training, which increases the number of driving lessons required (see Presto open days).

The Presto driving deposit (advance payment for driving lessons) must be paid within 3 weeks in the amount of EUR 150 and is a mandatory contractual requirement. Further payments for driving lessons are made as needed, based on actual usage, which significantly reduces financial pressure during the training process compared with Mustangs.

Paid money is not refunded.

Clause 3.8.3 of the Mustangs training contract states that in case of contract termination the paid registration fee, service fee and theory course fee are not refunded. While the registration and service fees may be understandable, the inclusion of the theory course fee raises questions. If the product has not been used, it should normally be refunded from a consumer protection perspective.

Presto Driving School provides refunds at any time, charging only a commission fee of EUR 18. Many clients change their plans during training, so this flexibility is highly appreciated.

Very short contract term.

Clause 4.10 of the Mustangs contract sets a very short contract term – 6 months. This is the shortest contract term among all driving schools in Latvia. In the sample contract sent to clients this term is not specified and appears only during contract signing, possibly intentionally.

It should be remembered that Cabinet Regulation No. 358 provides 1 year (12 months) for theory training and 2 years (24 months) for practical training, in total 3 years (36 months). By signing a contract with unfavorable terms, the contract takes precedence over the regulation.

Clause 4.11 of the Mustangs contract also introduces financial consequences if training is not completed within 6 months. If the school theory exam is not passed and at least 10 driving lessons are not completed, contract renewal costs EUR 15 per month. In extended training cases additional costs may reach up to EUR 450.

The Presto contract provides balanced responsibility between both parties. Presto Driving School has two unique contract-based benefits: compensation of EUR 20 if an instructor cancels a driving lesson and refund for a training stage if a complaint is justified.

Costs

Let us examine the main cost components in both driving schools and estimate the approximate difference in total costs.

1. The contract registration fee (EUR 10) at Mustangs is EUR 10 lower than at Presto (EUR 20).

2. The theory course at Mustangs costs EUR 1, while at Presto distance learning costs EUR 25 and in-person classes EUR 60.

3. The first aid course (EUR 55) costs the same in both schools.

4. The medical certificate (Riga – EUR 38) costs EUR 45 at Mustangs, which is EUR 7 more than at Presto.

5. Traffic rules books are sold only by Presto.

6. Mustangs forces earlier driving practice due to the large driving deposit, increasing total training costs by approximately EUR 50 (up to 3 additional driving lessons).

7. Driving lesson prices in both schools are similar. However, unlike Mustangs, Presto offers two qualification levels of instructors with a wide price range.

Taking into account the price differences, official state exam statistics, exam retakes, driving lesson statistics in Riga and Jelgava, differences in instructor qualification systems and Mustangs contract extension fees, it can be concluded that in category B at Mustangs Driving School you may overpay up to EUR 350 compared with Presto Driving School.
